The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is known as Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day. Ash Wednesday's the first day of Lent and a day of penitence. So clean your soul and celebrate as it's the last chance to eat well before the beginning of Lent.

However, there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pancakes and pancake races. Pancakes are part of ancient custom. Pancake races began in 1445 as a woman had forgotten the time whilst busy cooking pancakes. She heard the church bells ring, calling for confession time and ran into the street still carrying her frying pan!

The most famous pancake race is held in Buckinghamshire, England. The tossers have to toss at both the beginning and end of the race whilst wearing an apron and scarf for some reason. This is followed by a service at the Church of Olney.
