London's Hidden History
Galleons Reach
No need to leave your comfortable seat to see Stephen Timms', MP, favourite piece of hidden history. The strange looking building standing isolated in a field by the bridge is the old Galleons Hotel. Now sadly lying empty.
It was built late in the last century to accommodate travellers departing and arriving on the ocean going liners that once sailed from Galleons Reach. Rudyard Kipling stayed here on his way to work in India; do you like Kipling or have you never Kippled!
Good news there is a preservation order on the building and plans are afoot for the local community to make use of it.
The 1987 film Full Metal Jacket was filmed partly at Galleons Reach and partly around Beckton.
