Nicks from a dull razor

Why is a dull razor more likely to cause a nick than a sharp one?
You'd think the opposite would be the case!

Routine shaving doesn't dull the blade. The blades' microthin edge becomes distorted and this distortion of the sharp blade causes the nicks.
This is why an old-fashioned straight razor can be "sharpened" with a leather strop.
In fact the strop is smoothing - not sharpening - the blade.
