During our lengthy chat, this elderly gentleman poured his heart out to me. He had lost his wife two years earlier and had never slept in the bed that he had shared with her since.
He explained to me that the main goal in his life was to raise money for a small charity, and so he wanted me to help him find some items to sell for this purpose.
I spent much of my time trying to convince him not to sell his many personal treasures, including his war medals, which were so obviously close to his heart.
I took a few pieces to sell on his behalf. We sold the items and he raised under £100. Being the gentleman that he was, he donated it all to charity.
I have very fond memories of that special person, and after the show was aired, I received many letters to the effect that I had done the right thing to persuade the client to keep his family treasures.
Display well to sell well
If your stand looks attractive and is neatly displayed it will guarantee interest from the buyers at the fair. If you are specialising in one field then the specialists will come straight to you. This is when you need to have your pricing right, and you can only price right if you buy right. Do not be tempted to buy something for £80 with 15% buyer's premium when the highest price you could achieve for the item is £120 on your stall. I think also that on any antiques stall you should have something which stands out so as to attract the all important buyers, whether it's a large object, brightly coloured or of a unique shape.
